Hornets take 14-2 win to sweep season series from Mules

April 8, 2014-Emporia State scored in each of the first five innings on their way to a 14-2 non-conference win over #22 Central Missouri on Tuesday night in Warrensburg, Mo.  With the win the Hornets sweep the regular season series between the two, who are not scheduled to meet in MIAA regular season play.

The Hornets jump on top early with Levi Parker hitting a led off double. He went to third on a Justin Harris single and scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. After a ground out to start the second Aaron Gile reached on an error and scored on Zach Stuckey's home run. Parker was hit by a pitch and Harris walked and they both came home on Dean Long's single to center, with an error from the centerfielder allowing Harris to come home and give the Hornets a 5-0 lead. Price Jacobs hit a solo homer in the third to make it 6-0 before the Mules finally got on the board in the bottom of the inning.

Stuckey and Parker walked a pair of passed balls had runners at the corners when Harris delivered a two run double. After a walk to Toby Cornejo, Jacobs singled in Harris to make it 9-1 with two outs in the inning. Wade Hanna then walked and he and jacobs moved up a base on a wild pitch before Gile delivered the final blow of the inning with a two run double to cap the six run inning.  Dylan McEwin relieved Travis Hendry to start the bottom of the fourth and the Mules had runners reach on a double and an error before scoring their second run on a foul ball sac fly RBI. 

In the top of the fifth Parker and Long each walked and advanced on a wild pitch when Cornejo hit a two run single to cap the Emporia State scoring at 14 runs. Matt Hinkley worked a perfect sixth before loading the bases with two walks and an error in the bottom of the seventh. He cam back with a strikeout and two foul outs to first to end the game after seven innings.

Parker scored four times in the first five innings while Harris was two for three with two runs scored and two RBI. Jacobs was two for four with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored while Stuckey was one for two with a homer, two runs and two RBI.  McEwin was credited with the win, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 2.0 innings.  Hendry got his second start in a week against the Mules and went 3.0 innings, giving up one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Hinkley worked the final 2.0 scoreless innings and did not allow a hit while walking two and strikingout two.

The Hornets return to the Trusler Sports Complex this weekend for a four game series against Lincoln. The first game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Friday at Glennen Field.  The #7 Emporia State softball team will also be playing at Trusler on Friday with a double header against defending national champion Central Oklahoma scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.  Kyle Thompson from KFFX/Mix 104.9-FM will bring his afternoon show The Drive to Trusler and be on the air from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. as well.
