March 9, 2014-The Emporia State baseball team went on the road and got a split with #14 Missouri Southern in the first two games of a four game series in Joplin, Mo. on Sunday. The Hornets won game one 2-1 before falling 12-8 in the second game.
Shawn Talkington went the distance in the matinee, the only run coming in the first when the Hornets could not turn an inning ending double play. Emporia State tied the score in the sixth when Dean Long plated Justin Harris and went ahead when Toby Cornejo's ground out scored Levi Parker.
Emporia State took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap with Wade Hannah providing the big hit with a two RBI triple. Mo. Southern came back with three runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-4 lead and added a single run in the sixth before scoring five in the seventh inning for a 12-4 lead. The first four batters reached and scored in the top of the ninth for the Hornets, highlighted by a two run triple from pinch hitter Daniel Lorenzen. Emporia State left a runner on second when the game ended with a ground out.
The Hornets will wrap up the series with another 7/9 double header on Monday in Joplin, Mo. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
