March 11, 2014-Emporia State and Washburn both stepped out of MIAA play on Tuesday for a non-league Turnpike Tussle and the Hornets came away with a 9-7 win at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Levi Parker gave the Hornets an early lead when he led off the bottom of the first by getting hit by a pitch. He went to second on a sac and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Justin Harris' squeeze bunt for a 1-0 Emporia State lead. Two walks and two hit by pitch gave the Hornets another run in the bottom of the second for a 2-0 lead without a hit. Washburn tied the score on a two run homer from Dakota Kell.
The Hornets retook the lead on an RBI ground out by Parker in the fourth. Parker and Toby Cornejo each got RBI singles in the sixth for a 5-2 lead. Emporia State went up 6-2 when Parker stole home as part of a double steal with Cornejo. The Ichabods pulled within 6-3 on an RBI single from Kell in the seventh only to see the Hornets answer with a double from Todd Schultz that plated Zach Stucky in the bottom of the inning. Washburn scored four runs in the top of the eighth to tie the score. Kyle Carnahan had the game tying two RBI single that scored Connor Crimmins and David Gauntt who each had RBI in the inning as well.
Cornejo walked and Dean Long was hit by a pitch to open the Hornets eighth. After sac bunt Wade Hanna was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stucky delivered the game winning RBI on a single to left. With the bases loaded Mason Fischer laid a bunt down the first base line and was tagged out by the Ichabod pitcher Ryne Dowling as Long scored from third. After the tag out and after Long scored, Hanna was caught in a run down between home and third before getting tagged out sliding back into third to end the inning. Brenton Higgins came in to work the ninth and after a ground out and hit batter, struck out the final two batters he faced to pick up his third save of the season.
Parker was one for three with two runs, two RBI and was twice hit by a pitch. Cornejo had two RBI adn a run scored whie Fischer scored two run on two walks. Travis Hendry worked the first 7.0 innings allowing three runs on six hits in the no decision. Dylan McEwin worked 0.1 inning to get the win.
The Hornets are back in the Trusler Sports Complex this weekend for a four game series against Missouri Western. The series starts with a single game at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a double header on Saturday and single game on Sunday.
