March 10, 2014-Emporia State's offense exploded for 21 runs on 27 hits in a double header sweep of #14 Missouri Southern on Monday in Joplin, Mo. With the win the Hornets improved to 7-5 in the MIAA.
Emporia State used an eight run second inning in the matinee to take control in a 12-6 victory. The Hornets got back to back triples from Toby Cornejo and Dean Long to highlight the inning. Cornejo led the offense in the first game going two for five with a triple, a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Garrett Bane got the win, allowing only two earned runs in 4.2 innings of the seven inning game.
Long scored the first run of the nightcap to get the Hornets on the board in the fourth inning and would later have a pair of RBI doubles in Emporia State's 9-3 win. Dakota McKaskle picked up the win, giving up two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings. He retired the first eight batters he faced and did not allow a hit until there was one out in the fourth inning.
The Hornets are now 10-6 overall and 7-5 in MIAA play. They will step out of MIAA play on Tuesday to host Washburn in a non-conference Turnpike Tussle. First pitch for the single nine inning game is set for 5:00 p.m. on Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
