February 28, 2014-Each team got a home run in their last at bat to post wins as Emporia State split a double header at Pittsburg State on Friday afternoon. With the 6-5 Hornet win and 7-6 Gorilla victory the teams split their four game series.
Emporia State scored right off the bat in the matinee, getting two runs in the top of the first inning. Pitt State cut the lead in half with one in the second inning. The Hornets went up 5-1 with three runs in the fourth. Jordan Hodges had a two run double to highlight the inning. The Gorillas scored a pair of runs in the fourth and fith innings to tie the score at 5-5. With one out in the top of the seventh Dean Long hit his fourth home run of the year to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead.
Brenton Higgins pitched a shut out over the final 2.2 innings to earn the win. Long went two for three with two RBI and a run scored while Hodges was one for two with two RBI.
The Hornets took the lead in the night cap with one run in the second inning and went up 3-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth. The Gorillas got one run in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Emporia State retook the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh, going ahead 6-4 on Long's two RBI double. Pitt State got single runs in the seventh and eighth before Brad Foss hit a walk off homer with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Wade Hanna, Toby Cornejo and Levi Parker all went two for three with Hanna scoring two runs, Cornejo getting an RBI and a run and Parker scoring one run.
The Hornets are scheduled to head to Joplin, Mo. next weekend for a four game series against Missouri Southern.
