February 27, 2014-The Emporia State pitching staff allowed just two runs in a double header split at Pittsburg State on Thursday. The Hornets lost game one 2-1 and picked up a run rule 10-0 win in the second game.

Shawn Talkington allowed one run through six innings on nine hits to keep the Hornets in the matinee.  The Gorillas first run came on an RBI triple in the second inning.

The Hornets tied it with an unearned run in the fifth.  Zach Stucky led off with a single and went to second on a passed ball. Wade Hannah sacrificed Stucky to third and Toby Cornejo drove him home with a squeeze bunt to tie the score.

Talkington retired eight straight heading into the bottom of the seventh when Cody Ball hit the first pitch for a walk off home run.

Cornejp had two fo Emporia State's four hits and the only RBI in game one.

The night cap saw Jarrod Miller, Cory Sager and Connor Sjolander combine for an eight hit shut out in 8.0 innings.  Justin Harris had a two RBI single in the second to give the Hornet pitchers all the run support they would need.  He also had two RBI on a single in the third inning as Emporia State went up 7-0 after two and a half innings.  The Hornets got a two run homer from Levi Parker followed by a solo shot from Dean Long to take a 10-0 lead in the eighth inning.

Miller worked out of jams in each in of the first six innings, leaving a runner in scoring position in five of the six innings.  He scattered seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 6.0 innings before giving way to Sager.  Sager faced four allowing a runner to reach on an error, that he would eventually catch stealing, and a single.  Sjolander worked a perfect eighth with two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.

The top of the order was very productive in the night cap with leadoff hitter Harris going three for five with a run scored and four RBI.  Parker went two for three in the two hole with three RBI and a run scored.  Long was two for five with a solo home run while batting third.

The Hornets and Gorillas will try to get the final two games of their four game set in on Friday, weather permitting.
