February 16, 2014-The Emporia State baseball team came from behind in both games on Sunday to improve to 3-0 on the season.  The Hornets defeated Southwest Minn. State 4-2 in the matinee and then beat Mo. Western 10-9 in ten innings in a non-league matchup.

The Hornets fell behind in the top of the first of game one when Jon Ellis hit a two run home run.  Emporia State cut the lead in half on an RBI ground out by Tory Bell in the third and tied the score with another RBI ground out, this one from Dean Long in the fifth inning.  Wade Hanna hit a two run homer in the bottom of the eighth for the win.

Hanna and Price Jacobs both had two hits in the game while Justin Harris scored two run from the lead off position. Shawn Talkington went 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts but did not get a decision. Garrett Bane got the win in relief, going 2.2 innings without allowing a run.  Brenton Higgins got the final out for his first save of the season.

Emporia State jumped out to a 7-1 lead over Missouri Western in the nightcap before having to rally to force extra innings.  Todd Schultz had a two run single in the second while Toby Cornejo and Hanna delivered RBI doubles in the third and fifth. 

The Griffons exploded for seven runs in the eighth, highlighted by Ryan Degner's three run homer, to take an 8-7 lead. They added another run on Jake Schrader's solo home run in the ninth that put the Hornets in a 9-7 hole going to the bottom of the ninth.  Long led off with a double and David Richards tied the score with a two run homer.

The Griffons got two runners on in the top of the tenth, but Bane came on and coaxed a ground out to end the inning.  With two outs in the bottom of the tenth, Long worked a walk and after a single by Richards, Jacobs got an RBI single for the walk off win.

Richards, Hanna and Schultz all had two RBI in teh game while Long and Mason Fischer both scored two runs.  Levi Parker had a team high three hits.  Jarrod Miller started and went 6.0 innings allowing just one run on two hits. Bane picked up the win by getting the final out of the tenth.

Emporia State, now 3-0 on the year, is scheduled to play at Newman on Wednesday. First pitch in Wichita is set for 3:00 p.m.

Will Carter hit a two run homer in the fourth and Daivd Chew had a two RBI single in the eighth to give Missouri Western a 4-2 win over Southwest Minnesota in the middle game of the day.
