WILLIS, ERVIN HEADLINE HORNETS ON ALL-MIAA FOOTBALL TEAM

Total of 12 Emporia State players earn all-conference honors

November 18, 2014-Wide receivers Austin Willis and Kavaski Ervin head lined a group of 12 Hornets that earned All-MIAA recognition in football this year.  Willis and Ervin were both second-team All-MIAA picks while linemen Aaron Blount and Jarrett Stastny both earned third team honors

It is the second straight year Willis has earned second-team honors. He finished the year with 56 catches for 757 yards and six touchdowns. He was fifth in MIAA in receiving yards and receptions, fourth in touchdown catches, and tenth with 967 all-purpose yards. His 178 yards against Central Missouri was fifth best single game in the MIAA this year and his three 100 yard receiving games this year ranks third in conference. He finished career with 2,005 receiving yards on 128 catches for a 15.7 yards per catch average.  He is also an Academic All-District performer with 3.58 GPA in health promotions.

Ervin led the MIAA in receptions, was sixth in receiving yards,  and fifth in TD catches. He had 64 receptions fof 623 yards and five touchdowns. He had nine catches for 100 yards against Missouri Western.

Guard Jarrett Stastny and tackle Aaron Blount each earned Third-Team All-MIAA honors.  Stastny was a First-Team All-MIAA selection last year and was a two-time winner of the Hornets Squarehead Award as the top offensive lineman of a game.  It is the second straight year Blount has earned Third-Team honors. He was a three-time recipient of the Squarehead Award this season.

Cornerback Deveon Dinwiddie led the MIAA in interceptions and garnered Third-Team All-MIAA on defense.  He had four interceptions in just nine games due to injury. He had 49 tackles and ranked tenth in the MIAA in solo tackles on the season.

Lyndell Johnson earned honorable mention honors as both a linebacker and returner. He led the MIAA and was tenth in nation in fumble recoveries with three. He was the first Hornet to score a touchdown by fumble return, punt return, blocked field goal return and interception return in same season. His 69 yard punt return was the second longest in the MIAA this year and was first punt return for a touchdown by Emporia State since 2008.  He also recovered an on-side kick at Neb.-Kearney.

Johnson was joined on the defensive honorable mention team by linebackers Deshawn Dinwiddie and Jason Tetuan and defensive linemen Nick Schutte and Eddie Vinson.  Dinwiddie led the MIAA with five forced fumbles and ranked third in nation in total forced fumbles despite playing in only eight games. His 10.0 tackles per game would rank third in the MIAA had he played in enough games to qualify for the per game leaders. Tetuan was 22nd in the MIAA in total tackles with 73 on the year.  Vinson was the fifth leading tackler for the Hornets with 53 and had a team high 3.0 sacks. Schutte anchored the middle of the line and had 29 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Center Dan Goodman and tight end Reese Richards both earned honorable mention on offense. Goodman was a two-time winner of the Squarehead award and earned honorable mention honors for the second straight year. Richards had 14 catches for 210 yards and a touchdown before getting injured against Missouri Western.

Emporia State went 4-7 this year and will return five of their all-conference players in addition to 2013 second-team All-MIAA quarterback Brent Wilson who was injured and missed the final seven games of the year.
