EMPORIA STATE SOCCER WINS TURNPIKE TUSSLE IN TOPEKA

Hornets post 4-1 win over Washburn on Halloween

October 31, 2014-Emporia State matched their highest goal total of the season in a 4-1 win over Washburn on Halloween night in Topeka. With the win the Hornets set up a potential winner take all match at Neb.-Kearney on Sunday for a spot in the MIAA Tournament.

Emporia State took control early with a pair of goals in the first 16 minutes of action.  Grace Linton got things started with a goal from 20 yards out in the 13th minute after an Ichabod turnover in the box.Three minutes later Mallory Walden put one over the Washburn keepers head from the top of the box for a 2-0 lead.

Amy Heun made it 3-0 in the 54th minute off a centering pass from Kelsey Wakefield. Washburn finally broke through with a header from Cadence Bourne in the 65th minute.  Wakefield ended the scoring with a rebound put back off an Elizabeth High shot that hit the post in the 85th minute for the 4-1 final.

The Hornets had seven players take shots with four of the scoring.  Yadira Rivera had four saves for Emporia State on five Ichabod shots on goal.

Emporia State will travel to Neb.-Kearney on Sunday for the final regular season match of the season. The winner will be assured of a spot in the MIAA Tournament that starts on Wednesday. With wins over Northwest Missouri and Northeastern State, the Hornets would still make the tournament with a tie. Emporia State could still back into the tournament with a loss and losses by both Northwest Missouri and Northeastern State on Sunday.
