September 20, 2013-Emporia State scored a goal in each half and held Washburn scoreless to post a 2-0 win in the Turnpike Tussle on Friday night at the EHS Pitch.
The Hornets forced three corners in the first seven minutes but both teams were scoreless through the first 20 minutes. Kaitlyn Eden put one past the Ichabod keeper Tori Fuglister for a 1-0 Emporia State lead with 24:22 left in the opening frame. She hit the header of a cross from Jordan Foutch.
Although most of the action in the first half was in the Emporia State attacking end, as the Hornets finished the period with five corners, the shots were tied at five each at intermission.
The Hornets came out strong again after the break as all three of their second half shot came in the first 15 minutes. The final shot was header in front of the goal by McKenzie Koch that gave Emporia State a 2-0 lead with 30:54 left in the match. The assist came on a long lead pass from Shannon Thomas.
The Emporia State defense and keeper Yadira Rivera took control for the final 30 minutes. Washburn had two opportunities to score in the final 15 minutes. The Ichabods were called for a hand ball on one and hit the cross bar on another before it was blocked away. Neither team would get a shot over the final 12 minutes.
With the win the Hornets improved to 3-3-0 on the year and 1-0-0 in the MIAA. The win against Washburn opened a six match home stand for Emporia State. The next action for the Hornets will be a non-league contest against Newman on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the EHS Pitch.
NOTES:
The win snapped a 12 match winless streak for Emporia State.
It was the first shutout win in MIAA action for Emporia State since a 2-0 win at Missouri Western on Oct. 29, 2011.
This was the first time Emporia State has won their MIAA opener since a 4-2 win at Missouri Western on Sept. 11, 2005.
