Second Half Surge Leads Hornet Soccer to 3-0 Quarterfinal win over Bronchos

Emporia State scores all three goals in the final 20 minutes to take down Central Oklahoma

November 1, 2026 - Emporia State scored three goals in the final 20 minutes on their way to a 3-0 shutout on Sunday afternoon in the MIAA Quarterfinals over Central Oklahoma.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half saw Central Oklahoma with a pair of shots in the first eight minutes with both missing the target. Emporia State's first two opportunities came in the 18th and 19th minutes on shots by Megan Kephart and Peyton Pipes. Pipes' shot went just wide right following the Hornets' first corner kick of the afternoon.

Emporia State's back-to-back shots prompted in increase in opportunities for the Hornets, as they racked up four shots over the next eight minutes, including the first shot on target by Ella Favot in the 27th minute to force a save by the Bronchos.

The halftime break came up with neither side finding an advantage, as they score settled at 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.

Following the break, the Bronchos again had the first two shots, with the first forcing a save by Terra Rybuck in goal in the 49th minute.

Emporia State struggled to get going offensively until the final half hour, and the go-ahead goal finally came for the Hornets in the 70th minute. The Bronchos committed a foul inside the box as the Hornets earned a penalty kick. Aubrey Seltman took the penalty kick, and after the initial penalty was saved, Seltman converted the rebound to put the Hornets in front 1-0.

The Hornets wasted little time after the Seltman goal to doubled their advantage over the Bronchos. Emporia State struck on the counterattack, as Megan Kephart beat one defender before sliding the ball to Ella Favot in the center of the box as she converted the chance to make the score 2-0.

Emporia State held off the Bronchos for much of the final 15 minutes, with one opportunity bouncing off the crossbar in the 89th minute. In the final seconds of the match, Ava Huston picked up the ball near midfield before eventually playing a through ball into Avery Zimmerman who capitalized with her fourth goal of the season to cap off the 3-0 win.

A LOOK AT THE STATS
The Hornets held a 15-11 shot advantage with a 7-1 edge in shots on target. Aubrey Seltman's 70th minute goal was the first goal of her Hornet career, while Ella Favot and Avery Zimmerman added their ninth and fourth goals of the season.
