TURNPIKE TUSSLE
Emporia State returns home to take on Washburn in the first MIAA match of the season. The TurnpikeTussle is scheduled for the Emporia HS Pitch. Emporia State is playing at EHS due to problems with the resurfacing of the ESU Pitch. Kick-off of the Turnpike Tussle is set for 7:00 p.m.
LAST WEEKEND
Emporia State split a pair of games last weekend in Denver, Colo. The Hornets defeated #19 Regis 2-1 in double overtime for the first win over a nationally ranked team in program history on Friday. They came back with a 1-0 loss at Metro State on Sunday.
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 9-24-7 in his third season at Emporia State. He is 6-8-4 in non-conference action after going 4-2 outside the MIAA last season. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season and was named Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Barton to an 18-4 record. He is 1-1-1 against Washburn.
Tim Collins is 83-91-29 in his 11th season at Washburn. He is 12-4-3 against Emporia State.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
The Hornets are 2-3-0 on the season after splitting two games in Denver, Colo. last weekend. Emporia State upset #19 Regis 2-1 in double overtime behind goals from Jordan Foutch and Tommi Bouknight. It was the first win over a nationally ranked opponent in the history of the Hornet soccer program. The win over Regis also moved Sailer into a third place tie for wins at Emporia State. The Hornets are 0-1 at home this season after a 2-1 loss to Drury.
KNOW THE FOE
The Washburn Ichabods are 2-3-0 on the season and enter the match coming off a 3-0 shutout over Colorado Christian. Devon Schmitz and Kate Combs each have scored two goals for the Ichabods early in 2013. Goal keeper Tori Fuglister enters the Turnpike Tussle with an .827 save percentage.
LAST TIME VS. WASHBURN
Emporia State and Washburn tussled just one time last season with the Ichabods coming out on top 1-0. Tia Stovall scored the lone goal of the game. The Hornets managed just four shots on goal in the contest.
SERIES RECORD
This is the 20th meeting between Emporia State and Washburn. Washburn leads the series 13-4-2. The two teams will meet for a second time this season on October 23 in Topeka.
