June 10, 2013-Over 150 Emporia State student-athletes earned academic honors from the MIAA during the 2012-13 school year. Included in the list were five Hornets with 4.00 cumulative GPA's and 20 players that earned a 3.50 or better GPA along with athletic honors from the conference.
Emporia State had 20 MIAA Scholar-Athletes, the only conference award that combines academic and athletic success by requiring a 3.50 or better GPA and all-conference honors for their chosen sport. The 20 honorees are the most by a Kansas MIAA school and second most in the 15 team conference behind Central Missouri.
Five Hornets earned the MIAA Academic Excellence Award for maintaining a 4.00 grade point average in their career. This is extremely difficult at Emporia State due to the +/- grading system that awards less than a 4.00 for an A- grade. Nicole Rottinghaus was the only non-freshman on the list for Emporia State as a sophomore in marketing. Freshman Payson Maydew was the only Hornet and one of just 12 student-athletes in the MIAA to earn a spot on all three teams with a cumulative GPA of 4.00 in accounting and a third place finish in the decathlon at the Outdoor Track & Field championships.
A total of 156 Hornets were named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.00 cumulative GPA.
