June 10, 2013-Former Emporia State All-American Adam Schiltz has signed a free agent contract with the Houston Texans. He is the second Hornet in three years to sign with an NFL team.
Schiltz had 44 receptions for 560 yards and four touchdowns last season as the Hornets went 10-2. The Ponca City, Okla. native had 16 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns in his final two games, a 55-24 win over Washburn and a 45-38 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville in the Kanza Bowl.
The 6-4, 256 pounder was signed to replace the injured Phillip Supernaw. Supernaw has a foot injury that has kept him out of action since the beginning of OTAs. The Texans have five tight ends already on the roster, including draft pick Ryan Griffin along with veterans Owen Daniels and Garrett Graham.
He participated in the Texans’ rookie mini-camp as a tryout player last month. With 89 players on the roster, the Texans won't need to cut anyone to fill the spot. According to the website csnhouston.com, the Texans also worked out veteran Billy Bajema, but decided to go with a younger player.
Schiltz joins defensive tackle Harold Ayodele, who saw action with the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2011 preseason, as former Hornets with NFL contracts over the last three years. Emporia State has had 14 players play in one of the major professional football leagues. Two Hornets have won Super Bowl rings - two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Leon Lett with the Dallas Cowboys and punter Kelly Goodburn with the Washington Redskins.
