May 3, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team will now have to win two straight against Central Oklahoma after dropping the first game of their MIAA Opening Round Series 4-3 in Edmond, Okla. on Friday. The two teams will play each other at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday in Edmond.
The Bronchos took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and the Hornets cut the lead in half on David Richards solo home run with one out in the fifth inning. UCO answered with two more in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Back to back doubles by Ashton McCoy and Andrew Blackwell along with a single from pinch hitter Zack Carlson cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh inning. Carlson would be the last Hornet to reach base as Edgar Lopez retired the final seven batters to record the complete game win for Central Oklahoma.
The Hornets used five pitchers with starter Dakota McKaskle giving up all four runs on six hits in the 4.1 innings. The bullpen did not give up a run to keep Emporia State in the game.
The two teams will meet at 2:00 p.m. in Edmond, Okla. in an elimination game for the Hornets.
