April 3, 2013-Emporia State got two outstanding performances from their starting pitchers in a double header sweep of Central Oklahoma on Wednesday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won game one 3-1 and took the night cap 6-0 behind Kevin Shaffer's two hitter.
Jordan Slade started things for Emporia State in the bottom of the first in game one. He singled and went to second on a bobble by the left fielder. He then stole third and came home on a ground out for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets added a second unearned run in the second when Aaron Rea led off with a single, stole second, then went to third on a fly out. Luke Slagle was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Slagle stole second and the catcher's throw went into left field and allowed Rea to score.
Shawn Talkington breezed through the first three innings and got two outs in the fourth before the Bronchos had a base runner. Jared Wright walked and Ross Rose broke up the no hitter with a double that scored Wright. Matt Malloy followed with a single to right and Rea gunned down Rose trying to score to end the inning. The Hornets answered with their third unearned run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Carlson reached on a passed ball after striking out to open the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Rea was then hit by a pitch and both moved up 90 feet on David Nichols sac bunt. One out later Slagle was walked to load the bases and Todd Schultz was hit by a pitch to force in the final run.
Talkington went 5.2 innings to get the win, allowing one run on two hits with five strike outs and just two walks. Keith Picht pitched the final 1.1 retiring all four batters he faced for the save. Edgar Lopez nearly matched the effort for the Bronchos, going the distance and allowing three unearned runson two hits with five strike outs and one walk.
Shaffer pitched the first nine inning, complete game shut out by the Hornets since Derek Brooks against Truman on March 24, 2012 in the second game. He gave up a lead off single and let the runner go to second on a wild pitch before striking out the next three batters in the top of the first. Blake Sturgeon doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Carlson's sac fly to give Shaffer all the offensive support he would need in the bottom of the inning.
The Hornets added an insurance run in the bottom of the third when Andrew Blackwell scored on a ground out by Eric Dawson. Emporia State got some breathing room in the bottom of the fourth when Rea led off with a single and scored on Reller's double into the left field corner. Reller went to third on a ground out and then beat the throw home on a fielder's choice ground ball between the mound and first base by Slagle. After a wild pitch, Slade singled Slagle in for a 5-0 lead. The Hornets final run came on back to back doubles by Carlson and Rea in the bottom of the fifth.
Shaffer struckout a career high 13 Bronchos, the most K's by a Hornet since Tyler Applehans struckout 17 at Truman on April 11, 2009, and did not walk a batter. He retired the last 12 players he faced and hit two batters for the only base runners after a lead off single in the second inning.
Offensively six different Hornets had one RBI and eight of the nine batters either scored or drove in a run.
Emporia State is on the road this weekend at Truman. First pitch of Saturday's double header is scheduled for 1 p.m. with a single game set for 12 noon on Sunday in Kirksville, Mo.
