April 22, 2013-In a game shortened by lightning and rain Emporia State posted a 9-4 non-conference win over Bethany at the Trusler Sports Complex. A total of 12 pitchers were used in the game by the two teams.
Bethany scored first, getting a run on a lead off single followed by a double for a 1-0 lead after two batters. Emporia State starter Andrew Polly then settled down and retired the next 12 batters. The Hornets answered with run of their own in the bottom of first when Aaron Rea singled in Jordan Slade.
Emporia State had runners in every inning and loaded the bases in the fourth, but did not score again until the sixth. Rea and Eric Dawson both scored on wild pitches to give the Hornets a 3-1 lead. The Swedes cut the lead to one with a run in the top of the seventh before Emporia State batted around and scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Andrew Blackwell led off the seventh with a walk and scored on Slade's triple. Blake Sturgeon, Rea, Dawson and Todd Schultz all followed with singles. The Hornets then got RBI ground outs from Ashton McCoy and Tyler Spencer to round out the scoring and give Emporia State a 9-2 lead. Bethany scored two runs, one of them unearned, in the eighth to pull within 9-4 when the lightning came into the area. After a 25 minute delay both teams agreed to call it a game.
Matt Hinkley went 1.2 innings to get the win, allowing one run on two hits. Dawson went three for four with two RBI and a run scored. Slade was two for four with a triple, two runs and an RBI while Rea was two for three with two runs and an RBI.
Emporia State is scheduled to play Northeastern State on Wednesday. First pitch at Trusler Sports Complex is set for 1 p.m.
