FINAL HOME STAND
Emporia State begins it’s final regular season home stand with a single game against Bethany. The Hornets will play their final regular season games at Trusler on Wednesday.
THE COACHES
Bob Fornelli is 402-169 in his tenth season at Emporia State and is 708-282 overall in his 17th year overall. He is the fourth winningest active coach in Division II and is 19th in total victories. He has led Emporia State to two Division II World Series appearances in eight NCAA Tournaments. Fornelli has taken teams to the NCAA Tournament 11 times, and was the national runner-up in 2009 with Emporia State and in 2000 while at Ft. Hays State.
LAST AT-BAT
Emporia State split a double header at Pittsburg State on Tuesday to take the season series from the Gorillas. The Hornets won 9-2 in the night cap after a 5-0 loss in the first game to remain in third place in the MIAA. Ashton McCoy got one of the three hits for the Hornets in game one in his first action since getting his jaw broken by a pitch March 16 and went one for four with two runs, an RBI and reached base four times in game two. Eight of nine Hornet starters either scored or had an RBI in the nightcap. Shawn Talkington went 4.1 innings to get the win allowing just one hit and three walks while striking out seven.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State has won 20 of the last 25 games to surge into third place in the MIAA. The Hornets are hitting .307 as a team over the last 25 games and have outscored their opponents 176 to 98 over that time. Eight pitchers have picked up at least two wins over the last 25 games.
SCOUTING THE SWEDES
Bethany is 24-21 overall and are 14-10 in the KCAC. They won three of four over the weekend against St. Mary. They are batting .302 as a team with an ERA of 5.17 on the season. Roeman Fields is batting .350 with a team high 30 runs scored, 18 RBI, six doubles, three triples and two home runs. Ryan Gunther is 6-2 out of the bullpen with a 2.13 ERA and two saves.
THE SERIES
The Hornets have never lost to Bethany as they lead the all-time series 23-0 with the last meeting coming during the 2010 season.
LAST TIME VS. BETHANY
The #13 Hornets earned 11-7 and 10-0 wins over Bethany on March 23, 2010. The Hornets racked up 25 hits on the day including seven extra base hits.
In game one the Hornets broke a 4-4 tie on a Marc Albers home run. Calder Cody was three for three with three runs scored and three RBI. Tyler Knight also was three for three with three runs driven in. Matt Robertson earned his fourth win of the season. In game two Emporia State jumped out early, taking a five run lead in the first inning and never looked back. J.D. Herman had three RBI while Rudy Weiser plated two Hornets. Kenny Burkhead had a home run as Emporia State out hit Bethany 14-4. Spencer Blades pitched 4.0 innings allowing only three hits to earn his first career win. Outfielder Tyler Herrig pitched a hitless inning of relief for the Hornets.
ON DECK
Emporia State plays their final regular season home games on Wednesday when they host Northeastern State. First pitch of the double header is set for 1:00 p.m.
