Emporia State leaves 16 on base in double header

March 6, 2013-Emporia State had a lead in both games before falling in both games of an MIAA double header at Central Oklahoma.  The Hornets lost the matinee 9-7 and fell 8-5 in the nightcap.

Emporia State got four unearned in the second inning of the first game to take an early lead.  Jordan Slade walked and went to second as Todd Schultz reached on an error.  Dalton Piecukonis singled to load the bases and Andrew Blackwell drew an RBI walk.  With two outs Eric Dawson's single cleared the bases, thanks to an error in the outfield.

After Central Oklahoma answered with a run in the bottom of the second, neither team scored until Slade tripled in Aaron Rea and Luke Slagle.  Schultz then laid down a sac bunt to score Slade and give the Hornets and Andrew Polly a 7-1 lead.  Back to back Broncho doubles made it 7-2 to start the bottom of the fifth.  After a ground out Matt Johnson hit a two run homer to close within 7-4.  A line out and back to back singles brought Garrett Bane on in relief of Polly.  An error on his first batter faced led to another run before the Hornets got out of the inning by getting a Broncho out at the plate on the front end of a delayed double steal.

Blackwell led off the top of the sixth with a single and stole second.  He went to third on a fly out by Skylar Angood but was left there following a ground out a walk and a fielder's choice ground out.  Bane allowed a one out walk and then got a strike out to start the bottom of the sixth. Tyler Crabtree singled and Johnson doubled to drive in two and tie the score at 7-7.  Zach Gove came on in relief of Bane and gave up a two run homer to Jared Wright for the game winning RBI.  Schultz would single and get to second with two outs but did not score in the top of the seventh for the Hornets.

Polly started and went 4.2, allowing five runs, four earned on nine hits with two strike outs.  Bane was credited with the loss as he gave up three runs on two hits, a walk and a strike out in 1.0 inning.  Slade was two for three with two RBI, two runs scored and a triple while Eric Dawson was two for four with two RBI.

The Hornets took the first lead in the night cap as well when Slade doubled to left and scored on Zach Carlson's single to left center in the top of the second.  The Bronchos tied it in the bottom of the third on Johnson's RBI double and took the lead on Matt Malloy's three run home run.  Emporia State made it 4-2 with an RBI ground out by Angood that scored Rea in the top of the sixth. Central Oklahoma then scored three unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.  With two outs Eric Garza reached on an error by Dawson and two hit batters by starter Keith Picht loaded the bases. Johnson then hit a two RBI single that chased Picht.  Parker McDaniel come on in relief and threw two wild pitches to allow Johnson to come around and score.

Emporia State got one run back in the top of the seventh on singles by Blackwell and Dawson followed by an RBI double by Ashton McCoy. Central Oklahoma got another run in the bottom of the eighth on an infield single to take an 8-3 lead.  Todd Reller led off the ninth with a single and went to second on a walk to Blackwell.  Dawson singled to score Reller and a McCoy single loaded the bases to bring the tying run to the plate.  Slagle then grounded into a 5-3 double play that scored a run but gave the Hornets two outs.  Rea then grounded out to second to end the game.

Picht got the loss after allowing seven runs, four of them earned in 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.  Landon Hallam went the distance to earn the win for the Bronchos, allowing five runs on 14 hits with ten strike outs.  Dawson was three for five with an RBI while Blackwell went two for four with two runs scored.

The Hornets are scheduled to host Ft. Hays State this weekend at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The Bronchos scored nine of their 17 runs with two outs.
