March 4, 2013-Emporia State pounded out 16 hits, including five for extra bases in an 11-0 win over Lindenwood on Monday in Pryor, Okla. With the win, the Hornets took the series from the Lions 2-1.
The Hornets set the tone early. Shawn Talkington struck out lead off hitter Wade Rothermich on three pitches and proceeded to strike out the side. Blake Sturgeon got the offense started with a lead off home run and Emporia State led 1-0 after one. The Hornets made it 3-0 after two thanks to a sac fly from Dalton Piecukonis and a RBI double by Eric Dawson. It was 4-0 when Aaron Rea hit a solo homer with one out in the third.
Singles from Piecukonis, Dawson and Ashton McCoy made it 5-0 in the fourth before Rea hit a two run double that gave the Hornets a 7-0 lead. Sturgeon and Dawson both hit RBI singles in the fifth to push the lead to 9-0.
Emporia State had two runners reach but did not score in the sixth for the first time all day. Sturgeon hit a one out single and Dawson ended the game with a two run homer to make it 11-0 and envoke the run rule.
