March 22, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team had the tying run in scoring position in a 4-3 loss in the first game before securing a 9-1 win in game two against Southwest Baptist on Friday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.

The Hornets gave up four runs in the first inning, all with two outs, and Southwest Baptist was able to make them stand up in a Bearcat win in the matinee.  Emporia State got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first when Aaron Rea singled in Eric Dawson to make the score 4-1. Jordan Slade led off the third with a single and went to second on a failed pick-off attempt. He advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a sac fly by Dawson to cut the lead to 4-2. The Hornets manufactured another run in the sixth when Blake Sturgeon led off with a single and stole second.  He went to third on a ground out and was able to score on a fielding error by the third baseman.

David Richards reached on an error by the short stop to lead off the bottom of the seventh and stole second.  He went to third on a sac bunt and stayed there as Todd Schultz worked a walk.  SBU was able to coax a double play to end the inning and the game.

Dakota McKaskle took the loss, giving up all four runs in the first inning on six hits and a walk.  Over the next 4.2 innings he only allowed four hits with no walks and two strike outs. Keith Picht pitched the final 1.1 innings with three of four outs coming from strike outs.

The first five batters for Emporia State went five for 15 with all five getting a single hit.

The Bearcats got another two out run in the top of the first in the night cap.  The Hornets responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning thanks to a sac fly by Dawson and an RBI single from Aaron Rea. Todd Schultz led off the third by reaching base on a passed ball after striking out.  He stole second, went to third on a sac bunt and beat the throw home on a fielder's choice by Sturgeon.  Sturgeon was then caught stealing before Dawson walked.  Zach Carlson then hit a double into the corner in right field to score Dawson and give Emporia State a 4-1 lead after three innings.

The Hornets scored three runs on just two hits to open the game up in the sixth.  Dawson was hit to lead off the inning and went to second on Carlson's single.  Rea reached on a fielder's choice as Carlson was out at second. Tyler Spencer then laid down squeeze bunt to score Dawson. Emporia State loaded the bases when Richards reached on catcher's interference and Dalton Piecukonis delivered a sac fly.  A wild pitch scored Spencer to give the Hornets a 7-1 lead.  Emporia State tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final score of 9-1.

Garrett Bane worked the first 8.0 innings for the win, allowing an unearned run on six hits while striking out nine.  Matt Hinkley worked the ninth giving up a walk and a single before getting a 643 double play to end the game.   Sturgeon was two for four with two RBI and a run scored. Dawson was hitless in two official at bats, but scored twice and had an RBI.

The Hornets are scheduled to play the final game of the series against Southwest Baptist on Saturday, weather permitting.
