March 18, 2013-Emporia State could not come up with the big hit as they stranded nine runners, six in scoring position, in a 6-4 loss to Washburn on Monday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets did win the series 2-1 after sweeping a double header on Saturday.
Shawn Talkington got the first two batters out to start the game before the Ichabods strung together four straight hits to take a 2-0 lead in the first. The Hornets failed to score in the bottom of the inning as they left runners on second and third.
Washburn added a run in the sixth before Emporia State got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Eric Dawson singled and would score when Aaron Rea reached on an error. Rea would come around to score on Tyler Spencer's single to pull Emporia State within 3-2 after six innings.
Ben Jacks gave up two Ichabod runs on an error and back to back doubles in the eighth before Keith Picht came in to retire the side. The Hornets got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth on three walks and an error to pull within a run at 5-4. The Ichabods got an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a lead off double, wild pitch and ground out for the final of 6-4.
Shawn Talkington got the loss as he allowed three runs on seven hits with three strike outs in 6.0 innings. Tyler Spencer, David Richards and Todd Reller all had one RBI for the Hornets with Spencer the only one of the three to get a hit. Aaron Rea scored two runs without a hit as he reached on a walk and two Ichabod errors.
The Hornets are back in action on Wednesday when they play host to Pittsburg State. First pitch of the double header is set for 3 p.m.
