March 16, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team continued their hot hitting with a double header sweep of Washburn on Saturday in Topeka, Kan. The Hornets won 11-5 and 8-5 as they ran their winning streak to a season high five games.
Emporia State scored an unearned run in the first inning of the day thanks to failed pick off attempt by Washburn. They added two more in the second and another run in the third to lead 4-0. The Ichabods finally got on the board with a run in the fourth, but the Hornets responded with a six run fifth inning. Todd Schultz accounted for half of the runs with a three run homer as Emporia State took a 10-1 lead. The Hornets scored again in the sixth and the Ichabods got four in the bottom of the seventh before Kevin Shaffer came in and got two strike outs to end the game.
Schultz and Tyler Spencer both at three RBI from the bottom of the line up and Zack Carlson collected three hits. Dakota McKaskle scattered six hits over 5.0 innings with a walk and four strike outs to earn the win.
The Ichabods jumped on top in the night cap, plating three runs in the first and one in the second. The Hornets closed to 4-3 in the third inning, thanks in part to four Washburn errors in the inning. Emporia State tied it in the fourth with two outs when David Richards doubled and scored on Andrew Blackwell's single. Washburn regained the lead with a run in the sixth. The Hornets answered quickly with three runs in the top of the seventh. After tying the score on an RBI single by Blake Sturgeon, Tyler Spencer delivered the game winning, two RBI single with two outs. The Hornets added an insurance run in the eighth and Brenton Higgins pitched a perfect ninth for the save as Emporia State picked up their second straight MIAA double header sweep.
Sturgeon was three for five with two RBI and Spencer went two for four with two RBI to lead the offense. Matt Hinckley worked 4.1 innings in relief, allowing just one run to pick up the win. Higgins perfect ninth earned him the save.
