March 12, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team got their first sweep of the season with a pair of wins at Missouri Southern on Tuesday.
The Hornets used two big innings to take 9-6 victory in the matinee. After falling behind 1-0 in the first, Emporia State put three runs on the board in the top of the second. Tyler Spencer tied the score with an RBI double and Todd Reller gave the Hornets a 3-1 lead with a two run single.
The Lions retook the lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. The Hornets came back with five unearned runs on three hits and three Lion errors in the top of the fourth. Emporia State took the lead when two runs came in as Ashton McCoy reached on an error. At the end of the inning Emporia State held an 8-5 lead
Missouri Southern got one run back in the bottom of the sixth that the Hornets got back in the top of the seventh for the final score of 9-6.
All nine starters scored a run for the Hornets and seven of the nine had at least one RBI. Keith Picht pitched 2.2 innings and only allowed one unearned run to pick up the win. Dakota McKaskle went 1.2 innings for his first save of the year.
Emporia State got on the board first and never trailed in a 17-3 run rule win in the night cap. The Hornets got five runs in the third inning with Zack Carlson's two run double the big blow of the inning. The Lions scored one run in the bottom of the third but the Hornets answered with four runs including a three run home run by Jordan Slade.
Brenton Higgins struck out the first two Lions in the top of the fourth and got a ground out for a 1-2-3 inning. The Hornets sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth with a three run homer from Carlson and a two RBI double from Todd Schultz providing five of the eight runs in the inning. Missouri Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and had the bases loaded when Higgins got a strike out to end the inning.
Emporia State again got contributions from many players as eight players scored a run and seven Hornets had at least one RBI. Carlson was three for five with five RBI, three runs scored a double and a home run. Schultz was three for three with three runs scored, two RBI, two doubles and a walk. Aaron Rea was three for four with two RBI, a run and a triple. Slade was two for four with three RBI, two runs and a home run.
Higgins had nine strikeouts in 5.0 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs, two of them earned, for his second win of the season.
The Hornets will host McPherson in a single, nine inning make up game on Wednesday night at 5 p.m. on Glenne Field at the Trusler Sports Complex.
