Emporia State swept in home opening MIAA series for first time

February 17, 2013-The Emporia State pitching staff gave up eight extra base hits in a 12-2 loss to Missouri Western on Sunday afternoon at the Trusler Sports Complex.

Starting pitcher Shawn Talkington held the Griffons scoreless through three innings before giving up a single run in the fourth.  Missouri Western broke through with five runs, four of them unearned in the top of the fifth. They extended the lead to 11-0 with another five spot in the top of the seventh.  Todd Schultz hit a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going for Emporia State before the Griffons added another run in the ninth.

Talkington took the loss for Emporia State, giving up four runs, two of them earned, on four hits with two strikeouts.  Skylar Angood had two hits while Schutlz had the only RBI for the Hornets.

Next up for the Hornets will be Northeastern State on Wednesday afternoon.  First pitch of the double header from the Trusler Sports complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
