Hornets Swept in Home Opening MIAA DH for First Time

February 16, 2013-The Emporia State baseball team was swept by Missouri Western in the MIAA opening games for both teams.  The Hornets lost game one 8-5 and fell 7-6 in game two.

Western jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first of game one.  The Hornets closed to within 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth only to see the Griffons add three mor in the top of the fifth.  With two on in the bottom of the fifth Aaron Rea tripled and scored on an error to pull the Hornets within a run at 6-5. Missouri Western then got solo home runs in the sixth and seventhas insurance in the 8-5 win.

Dakota McKaskle took the loss on the hill for the Hornets, giving up six runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings. Skylar Angood, Ashton McCoy and David Richards all had two hits for the Hornets in the matinee.

The Griffons again got on the board first in the nightcap with two runs in the top of the second.  The Hornets manufactured a pair of runs on their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.  McCoy led off with a walk and went to second on a passed ball.  Luke Slagle also walked and McCoy reached third on another passed ball during his at bat.  McCoy then scored on a wild pitch. Todd Schultz RBI single scored Slagle to tie the score. 

The Hornets took the lead in the third on an RBI single from Slagle that scored Eric Dawson.  Missouri Western tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth.  Schultz hit a bases loaded triple in the seventh to give the Hornets a 6-3 lead.  Keith Picht came on to pitch the eighth and gave up four runs on three hits with two walks as the Griffons took a 7-6 lead.  Emporia State had single base runners in the eighth and ninth but could not score.

Garrett Bane started for the Hornets and gave up three runs on seven hits with five strike outs in 6.0 innings.  Picht took the loss in relief.  Shultz was four for five with four RBI at the plate.

The Hornets and Griffons wrap up their three game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 noon at Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
