Sept. 14, 2012 - Nikki Schmitz made three saves as the Emporia State soccer team lost the Turnpike Tussle to Washburn 1-0 in Topeka, Kan.

The game marked the MIAA opener for both teams, and the only Turnpike Tussle of the season. Emporia State is now 2-3-0 while Washburn improves to 1-4-0.

The Hornets managed four shots, two on goal, credited to Elizabeth High and Mindi Lozenski. Jordan Foutch and Mallory Walden were responsible for Emporia State’s other two shots. Foutch, along with freshman Perri Mulder, were handed their first starts of the season for the Hornets.

Washburn started the game aggressively, forcing Schmitz into a save in the first minute. The Lady Blues were rewarded with a goal in the sixth minute on an eight yard strike by Tia Stovall, with Lindsey Lambert providing the assist.

Emporia State plays its next game Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Alva, Okla. against Northwestern Oklahoma State.
