MIAA PLAY BEGINS WITH TURNPIKE TUSSLE

The Emporia State soccer team opens its MIAA schedule with the Turnpike Tussle away at Washburn in Topeka, Kan. The Hornets enter the match with a record of 2-2-0, the Lady Blues are winless, 0-4-0 on the season.

THE COACHES?

Bryan Sailer is 5-12-5 in his second season at Emporia State. Prior to coming to ESU he led Barton County Community College to a 59-23-2 overall record in four seasons. He led them to the KJCAA Championships during the 2008 season. During his four years, the Cougars broke records for the most goals in a game and season as well as nearly every individual mark. 

Tim Collins is in his 10th season with Washburn. His career record is 77-78-29.

LAST TIME OUT  

Upper Iowa played host to Emporia State, a match that saw the Peacocks grab a 1-0 victory. The Hornets outshot the Peacocks 15-14 and held a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Nikki Schmitz made four saves and maintained her 1.00 goals against average. The lone goal of the match was scored in the 5th minute by Upper Iowa’s Jill Schechinger. 

LAST TIME VS. WASHBURN 

The last match between Emporia State and Washburn was the season finale in Topeka on Oct. 20, which ended in a tie. The Lady Blues struck first, through a 58th minute goal by Caysie Beetley. In the 76th minute, forward Karson Wilson scored off  a corner taken by Mindi Lozenski to even the score at 1-1. Emporia State outshot Washburn 9-6 in the second half.

The Hornets won the Sept. 22 match in Emporia 1-0, thanks to an 84th minute goal by Caitie Hyde, assisted by Shannon Thomas. Goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz made eight saves in the shutout, the first of three on the season.

SERIES HISTORY  

Washburn holds a 12-4-2 lead in the all-time series and is 6-1-2 in Topeka. The Hornets earned a 1-1 tie last season on the Lady Blues’ pitch and last won in Topeka in 2004 by a score of 2-0.
