August 31, 2012 - Ashleigh Harris converted a penalty kick in the 60th minute to give Emporia State a win over East Central at the MIAA/GAC challenge in St. Joseph, Mo.
With the win, Emporia State avenges a 1-0 loss at the hands of East Central at last season's MIAA/GAC challenge.
The Hornets made it a point to play on the front foot and peppered the Tigers goal with 18 shots, eight on target. Emporia State managed nine shots in the first half and 10 in the second. Harris had three shots, all on target, while Mindi Lozenski also had an eye for goal, attempting four shots. Goalkeeper Nikki Schmitz was forced to make three saves, two in the final 15 minutes.
The penalty was earned after Emporia State applied pressure in the East Central half, leading to shots by Shannon Thomas and Mallory Walden. The sustained attack led to a foul by the Tigers in the penalty area, and the ensuing penalty kick proved to be the difference in the game.
The Hornets are in action Sunday Sept. 2 when they face Southwestern Oklahoma State at noon.
