June 20, 2012-Emporia State's Katelyn Mona can add Capital One Academic All-American to her list of honors after being named to the women's track and field/cross country first-team on Wednesday. The award is Emporia State's 18th Academic All-American honor of the 21st century for Emporia State and the 42nd all-time dating back to 1972.
A health promotions major with a 3.99 GPA, Mona was one of three finalists for the Ken B. Jones Award as the top student-athlete in the MIAA. The Lenexa, Kan. native was the ESU Outstanding Female Student-Athlete and winner of the Wal-Mart Without Peer Award presented by Emporia State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was a three-time All-American for the Hornets after placing seventh at the 800m in the indoor nationals. In 2011, she placed fifth indoors and seventh outdoors in the 800m. She is a ten-time MIAA champion, including wining three events at this year's MIAA Indoor Championships. She was also honored as an MIAA Scholar-Athlete for maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA and earning All-MIAA honors on the track and was on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll.
Mona is the 19th Hornet to earn first-team Academic All-America honors and the first since fellow trackster Kristin Larson in 2006. The Emporia State women's track and field program has had 11 Academic All-Americans since 1984.
Mona is one of three MIAA student-athletes on the first team and one of nine from the conference to earn Capital One Academic All-America honors.
