May 4, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team struggled to get the bats going as they were swept by Washburn on the opening day of the Turnpike Tussle. The Hornets dropped game one 6-2 before falling 11-5 in the second game.
In game one ESU struck first as Dorain Williams scored on an RBI ground out by Joe Vaskas. The Ichabods would answer to tie the game with a single run in the top of the third and plate two in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good in the 6-2 victory.
At the plate Eric Dawson and Zack Carlson each had two hit ballgames going two for three. Ashton McCoy added an RBI for ESU while Joe Kornbrust added a run scored.
On the mound Brandon Faulkner pitched six innings allowing five earned runs and stirking out five as he fell to 7-3 on the season.
In game two Washburn struck early and often as they put up seven runs across the first and second innings. The Hornets answered with single runs in the bottom of each of those innings but it was not enough in the 11-5 Washburn win.
At the plate Zack Carlson went three for five with a single RBI. Joe Kornbrust went two for five with two runs scored and one run driven in. Joe Vaskas hit his 10th home run of the season with a solo shot in the second inning. Dorina Williams scored run while Tyler Buchanan added an RBI.
On the mound Derek Brooks fell to 6-3 on the season. Drew Smith only allowed one run over 4.2 innings of work and Zach Dodson pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The two teams will face off again tomorrow, with a scheduled first pitch for 3 p.m. from Falley Field in Topeka, Kan.
