May 10, 2012 -- Both teams got strong efforts from their pitchers as the Emporia State baseball team was eliminated from the MIAA Tournament. The Hornets fell 4-1 to Washburn as no runs were scored before the seventh inning of the ballgame.
Only one runner had reached third base prior to the bottom of the seventh innning when the Ichabods struck for four runs. The Hornets would answer with a run in the top of the eighth, but would get no closer in the 4-1 loss.
At the plate Joe Kornbrust was three for four with the teams lone run batted in. Tyler Spencer went one for three with a run scored. Dorain Williams, Zack Carlson and Joe Vaskas also each came up with one hit.
On the mound Shawn Talkington pitched 6.1 innings allowing three runs and striking out three. Brandon Faulkner went 1.0 inning of scorless and hitless relief.
The Hornets end the season 26-22 and will not play in the NCAA South Central Regional for the first time since Bob Fornelli took over as head coach.
