April 6, 2012 -- Shawn Talkington threw 120 pitches and struck out a career high 12 batters, but it was not enough as the Emporia State baseball team fell 1-0 in ten innings to Central Oklahoma. The two teams combined for only six hits through the first five innings as both pitchers had masterful nights.
Talkington twice worked out of jams where the Bronchos had runners on third base with less than two outs. He struck out the side in two different innings. ESU loaded the bases twice in the ballgame but could not convert either time. The two teams combined to strand 19 runners in the ballgame.
At the plate Ashton McCoy went two for five and Rudy Weiser was two for four as they were the only Hornets with multiple hits. Talkington was the highlight for the Hornets going 8.0 innings striking out the 12 while walking only one and allowing just five hits. He also worked around two Hornet errors including one which left him with runners at second and third and one out. Keith Picht threw for the second night in a row this time earning the loss allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.
The series, which has seen only four total runs will end with tomorrow's rubber match scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
