April 5, 2012 -- The #22 Emporia State baseball team needed ten innings, but pulled out a 3-2 victory over Central Oklahoma. The Hornets outhit the Bronchos 12-7 and took advantage of 14 strikeouts by ESU Pitchers.

The Hornets got the scoring underway in the second inning as Joe Hosey singled in Zack Carlson to give ESU the 1-0 advantage. UCO would answer in the top of the third when they hit the first of their two home runs. ESU would then score the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eight inning as Joe Kornburst led off with a triple and was driven in by Eric Dawson. The Bronchos would answer with their second home run in the top o f the ninth inning.

ESU would not score in the bottom half of the ninth and the Bronchos would force extra innings. Keith Picht held UCO off the scoreboard in the top of the tenth inning. Beau Poston who came in as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a double. Ashton McCoy would then bunt him to third base. After fouling of the first pitch he saw Kornbrust laid down the perfect bunt to give ESU the 3-2 win.

At the plate Kornburst finished two for five one one run scored and one driven in. Joining him with multiple hits were Joe Hosey and Rudy Weiser who each added two hits to the Hornet effort. Kornburst has now driven in or scored the winning run in eight games for ESU this season.

On the mound Derek Brooks pitched a great game despite earning the no decision he struck out a career high 12 UCO hitter. Picht earned his third win of the season stirking out two and allowing only one hit over the final 1.1 innings.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow for a scheduled 6 p.m. first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
