Hornets rack up 18 runs on 18 hits in 18-8 route

April 24, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team racked up 18 hits and took advantage of six Jet errors as they run-ruled Newman on the road. The Hornets scored in every inning but one as they rolled to an 18-8 victory.

The Hornets struck first jumping out two a 4-0 lead after three innings. ESU would jump on top 9-0 in the top of the third before the Jets responded with five runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 9-5. ESU would grab four more runs between the top of the fourth and fifth to jump out to a 13-5 lead before Newman added three in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-8. That is as close as they would get as ESU would add five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take the 10 run advantage and pull out the 18-8 win.

At the plate Joe Vaskas continued his hot hitting going five for six with six runs driven in as he also added his ninth home run of the season. Joe Hosey hit his third home run in last the four game and added four runs driven in for the Hornets. Blake Brisson went two for four with two runs scored and four runs driven in.

Dorain Williams was two for four at the plate and scored a season high five runs while adding an RBI. Ashton McCoy went two for three and scored three runs in the ballgame. Eric Dawson and Joe Kornbrust also added one RBI apiece for ESU while Kornbrust scored two runs.


On the mound Drew Smith earned his first win of the season.

ESU will open a four game series against #6 Central Missouri on April 27 at home. First pitch for the match-up is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
