April 22, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team came from behind in game one and Lincoln came from behind in game two as ESU earned the split. The Hornets came back for a 7-5 extra inning win in game one and LU came from behind for a 5-4 walk-off win in game two.
In game one ESU fell behind 5-0 in the first three innings. ESU would begin to chip away in the top of the fourth as they got single runs in the fourth and fifth inning. They would then grab two runs in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to a single run. They would then scratch across a run in the top of the seventh to force extra inning. ESU would then plate two runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn the extra inning victory.
At the plate Joe Vaskas had a home run and a double as he drove in three runs for ESU. Rudy Weiser, Joe Kornbrust and Tyler Spencer added single RBI for the Hornets. Eric Dawson was three for five with three runs scored.
On the mound Keith Picht pitched 5.0 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his fourth win. He struck out three and only allowed five hits over the final five frames.
In game two ESU jumped on top in the top of the third inning before Lincoln answered with a single run in the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets would then plate three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Blue Tigers would earn the walk-off 5-4 win with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
At the plate Joe Vaskas had his fourth straight multiple RBI game as he had a double and drove in two runs. Joe Kornbrust went two for three with a single run driven in. Dorain Williams scored a run and drove in a run in the ESU effort.
On the mound Shawn Talkington struck out six while allowing four runs over 6.1 innings. Zach Gove earned his fourth loss of the season as he allowed the go-ahead run to score on a wild pitch.
The Hornets will travel to Newman on April 24 for a scheduled 5 p.m. first pitch from Wichita, Kan.
