April 14, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team won the resumption of the suspended game, but then dropped the double header and the series 3-1 to Missouri Southern. The Hornets won 9-1 before falling 3-2 and 4-2 in the double header.
In game game resumed from April 13 ESU came out and Brandon Faulkner worked out of a first and third with one out jam to push the game into the top of the fifth inning. Joe Hosey would then put the game away for the Hornets with a three run home run in the top of the fifth inning as ESU rolled to a 9-1 victory.
At the plate Joe Hosey led the way with three runs batted in while Eric Dawson went three for five with two runs scored. Ashton McCoy went two for four with two runs driven in. Joe Vaskas was three for five in the game with an RBI and a run scored. Zack Carlson scored two runs while Rudy Weiser went two for five with an RBI. Joe Kornbrust was three for five with two runs scored.
On the mound Shawn Talkington earned his second win of the season as he and Brandon Faulkner combined for three strikeouts and only allowed 10 hits.
In game first game of the scheduled double header ESU and MSSU traded runs in the first inning and would not see a run scored again until the bottom of the fifth. The Lions added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Hornets would load the bases in the top of the seventh inning but could only scratch across one run as MSSU pulled out the 3-2 win.
At the plate Blake Brisson went two for four and scored a run. Dorain Williams was the only other Hornet with multiple hits going two for three while Ahston McCoy and Eric Dawson had the ESU RBI.
On the mound Matt Robertson pitched 6.0 innings allowing nine hits and stirking out six earning his third loss of the season.
In the second game of the double header Missouri Southern jumped on top in the bottom of the third, but ESU answered in the top of the fourth to tie the game 1-1. MSSU would take the lead back in the bottom half of the inning at 2-1 before ESU answered again in the top of the fifth for a 2-2 tie. The Lions would then push across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull out a 4-2 victory.
At the plate Dric Dawson went two for four as did Joe Vaskas who added an RBI. Ashton McCoy was one for three with a run scored and a run batted in. Blake Brisson also went one for four with a run scored.
On the mound Keith Picht fell to 3-7 going 4.1 innings and stirking out two. Zach Gove pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Hornets.
ESU will have the week off before traveling to Lincoln for a four game series on April 20-22 in Jefferson City, Mo.
