April 13, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team dropped the series opener against Missouri Southern before heavy rains and lightning came in the fourth inning of game two. The Hornets fell 8-1 and were leading game two 3-0 when it was suspended to be resumed April 14 at 11 a.m.
In game one Missouri Southern struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Hornets responded in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Lions would then plate five in the bottom of the fifth and two in the bottom of the sixth as they pulled out the 8-1 victory.
At the plate for ESU Ashton McCoy had two of the Hornets five hits as well as scoring their lone run. After doubled in the fourth Joe Kornbrust hit a single to drive him in and earn ESU's only RBI. Zack Carlson and Joe Vaskas also had one hit apiece for the Hornets.
On the mound Derek Brooks earned just his first loss of the season allowing six runs over 4.2 innings. Dominik King and Jarrod Miller each worked 0.1 inning of scoreless relief.
In game two the Hornets plated three runs in the top of the first inning. They were leading 3-0 with Shawn Talkington on the mound when the game was suspended in the bottom of the fourth due to rain and lightning. Missouri Southern had runners on first and third with one out when the game was suspended.
Zack Carlson and Joe Vaskas had provided RBI singles for the Hornets in the first inning. The game will resume on April 14 at 11 a.m. from Joplin, Mo. and will be followed by the two games of the second double header.
