April 10, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team was outhit in both games as they dropped a double header to Missouri Western at home. The Hornets fell 5-4 in extra innings in game one before falling 6-2 in the second game.
In game one Brandon Faulkner started out hot on the mound retiring the first four batters on only four pitches. He blank the Griffons through three before MWSU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth. They would tack on two more in the top of the sixth to take a 4-0 advantage. The Hornet bats would finally get going in the bottom of the seventh as they plated four runs on six straight hits. The Griffons would then plate a run in the first of the extra innings to take the game as they held ESU scoreless in the bottom of the eighth.
At the plate Joe Kornbrust was the only Hornet with multiple hits going two for four on the day. Rudy Weiser went one for three with a two RBI single and Joe Hosey and Zack Carlson also added RBI singles.
On the mound Brandon Faulkner worked six innings allowing only four runs on eight hits. Keith Picht earned the loss falling to 3-6 on the season allowing one run on two hits.
In game two Missouri Western jumped on top early plating a single run in the top of the first. ESU would answer with a two RBI double by Dorain Williams in the bottom of the second. The Griffons would regain the lead for good plating two in the top of the third and three in the top of the fourth.
At the plate Williams was one for three with two RBI as MWSU pitching held ESU to just five hits on the afternoon. Zach Gove picked up the loss on the mound working 3.1 innings and allowing four runs. Ethan Appleby, Jarrod Miller and Justin Maxson all worked scorless innings of relief.
ESU will now hit the road this weekend when they travel to Missouri Southern for a four game series. First pitch to begin the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on April 13 from Joplin, Mo.
