April 1, 2012 -- The #28 Emporia State baseball team outhit Fort Hays State 10-8 on the day, but could not overcome two FHSU extra base hits. The Hornets hit ten singles in the 5-2 loss to the Tigers, though ESU still won the series 3-1.
ESU jumped ahead early scoring two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning as Matt Robertson retired nine straight on the hill to open the game for ESU. The Tigers did their damage with two outs in the top of the fifth inning on a three run home run by Nash Smith. Sheldon Howell would add a two run triple in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
At the plate Eric Dawson went three for four with a run scored for ESU. Beau Poston was two for four with an RBI, while Zack Carlson went one for four with a run scored. Joe Vaskas drove in the other run with an RBI groundout in the second inning.
On the mound Matt Robertson allowed five earned runs in his second loss of the season while striking out five. Ethan Appleby and Jarrod Miller pitched the final two innings of scoreless baseball to close out the game.
The Hornets will return to action on April 3 when they are scheduled to face Newman for a single nine-inning game at 5 p.m. from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
