ESU wins big in game one, uses late inning heroics to take game two

March 31, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team rolled in game one, and needed 10 innings in game two against Fort Hays State. The Hornet rolled in game one 17-5 and knocked off the Tigers 6-5 in ten innings in the second game.

In game one The Hornets fell behind early 2-0 as the Tigers pushed across two runs in the third inning. The Hornets would answer in the bottom half of the third with eight runs though as the ESU bats came to life. Fort Hays State would then cut the lead to only three runs in the top of the fifth inning, before the Hornets hammered out eight more runs in the bottom half. ESU would add one more in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 17-5 victory.

At the plate Joe Vaskas hit his sixth home run and drove in four as he finished two for four in the game. Joe Hosey also homered for the Hornets, his first of the season and drove in two runs. Zack Carlson went one for three and drove in three runs while scoring two. Beau Poston went two for three with two runs driven in and two runs scored. Dorain Williams was four for five at the plate driving in two runs and scoring two. Ashton McCoy went two for four with two RBI and three runs scored.

On the mound Derek Brooks moved to 5-0 on the season throwing 4.2 innings and striking out three while allowing four earned runs. Ben Jacks and Ethan Appleby combined to throw 2.1 innings of scorless relief.

In game two the Hornets jumped out to a quick lead scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. After FHSU scored on in the top of the second the Hornets tacked on one more to take a 3-1 lead. The Tigers would then tie the game by plating two runs in the top of the fifth and no one would scored for the remainder of the regularly scheduled innings. FHSU would grab unearned runs in both the eight and ninth innings. However ESU answered in both of those innings, first with a two-out Dorain Williams home run and then a Joe Kornbrust lead off home run. ESU would then hold the Tigers scoreless in the top of the 10th inning while Ashton McCoy hit a two-out RBI single to win the game in the bottom half.

At the plate Williams continued his hot hitting going three for five with two runs scored and an RBI. Ashton McCoy also went three for five with one run and three runs driven in. Joe Kornbrust was one for three on the game with two RBI and a run scored. Tyler Spencer came on in the ninth inning, hitting a single and scoring the game winning run.

On the mound Shawn Talkington started the game throwing 4.2 innings and allowing jus three earned runs. Both Dominick King and Brandon Faulkner would work the final two innings for the Hornets, neither allowing a run. Faulkner picked up his fifth win of the season stirking out one and allowing no base runners in the final 0.2 innings.

The two teams will face off again tomorrow for a scheduled noon first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
