Hornets fall 5-4 in extra innings before winning 8-0

March 25, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team split the double header on their second day of play against Truman. The Hornets dropped the opener 5-4 in 10 innings before coming back to win game two 8-0 over the Bulldogs.

In game one Truman jumped out to the lead scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Hornets would take advantage of a Truman error in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 2-1. Truman would then grab a single talley in the top of the fifth before ESU answered with an inside the park two run home run by Dorain Williams. The Bulldogs would regain the lead with a single run in the top of the sixth inning. ESU would tie the game in the bottom of the seventh as Williams picked up his third RBI. The game would go into extra innings before Truman went ahead for good pushing across a run in the top of the 10th inning.

Both teams stranded ten runners in the game as ESU stranded runners on first and second in the bottom half of the 10th inning. At the plate Williams finished two for five with one run scored and three driven in. Zack Carlson went three for five while Ashton McCoy, Rudy Weiser and Beau Poston added runs scored.

On the mound Keith Picht started the game striking out three over 3.2 innings of work. Ben Jacks worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while Matt Robertson earned his first loss of the season working the final 2.1 innings allowing only one hit, but also hitting one batter.

In game two the Hornets struck early as Joe Kornbrust hit his sixth home run of the season driving in three to give ESU the 3-0 lead in the first. ESU would add one run in the second and four in the third as they rolled to an 8-0 win.

At the plate Kornbrust was one for three with one run scored and four RBI. Zack Carlson finished a strong day going two for three with a run scored. Jordan Slade was one for two with one run scored two runs driven in. Rudy Weiser went one for two with one run scored and one driven in. Joe Hosey went two for three with a run scored and an RBI. Joe Vaskas, Ashton McCoy and Dorain Williams also scored runs.

On the mound Shawn Talkington earned his first win, in his first career start going 5.0 innings and striking out three while allowing only three hits. Jarrod Miller and Ethan Appleby each pitched an inning of scoreless relief for the Hornets.

ESU will return to play on March 27 when they travel to Missouri Western for a double header with a scheduled 2 p.m. first pitch from St. Joseph, Mo.
