ESU bats come to life in game one, squeak out pitchers duel in game two

March 24, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team exploded for 12 hits in game one, and squeaked out a pitchers duel in game two as they swept Truman. The Hornets took game one 12-1 before winning game two 1-0 in 10 innings.

In game one the Hornets jumped out first scoring two runs in the bottom of the first before Truman scored their only run of the game in the top of the second. ESU would tack on three runs in the second and seven in the sixth as they pulled out a 12-1 win. The Hornets took advantage of four TSU errors, three of which game in ESU's two run first inning.

At the plate Joe Kornbrust and Rudy Weiser both collected two hits, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Dorain Williams went one for three on the game with two runs scored and two runs driven in. Eric Dawson went two for four with two runs driven in and a run scored. Zack Carlson was two for three on the day with one run scored and an RBI.

On the mound Brandon Faulkner threw a complete game striking out five and allowing only one run on four hits. He picked up his fourth win of the season as he allowed only the four baserunners not walking or hitting a batter in the game.

In game two the game saw zero's on the scoreboard as the two teams stranded a total of 10 runners through the first nine and a half innings. Kornbrust stole home to give the Hornets the victory with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the tenth inning.

On the mound Derek Brooks pitched a gem of a game striking out seven as he pitched nine innnings and only once let a runner past second base, as he struck on a hitter looking when the only Bulldog advanced to third with two outs. Matt Robertson pitched one inning of relief striking out one to earn his third victory of the season.

At the plate Kornbrust had the Hornets only multiple hit game going two for four on the afternoon with the only run scored.

The two teams will face off against tomorrow for a scheduled 12 noon first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
