March 17, 2012 -- The #21 Emporia State baseball team split the double header with Pittsburg State at Glennen Field. The Hornets took game one 6-0 and Pittsburg State took game two by a scored of 9-5.
In game one the Hornets got a strong pitching performance from Derek Brooks, though ESU was one hit into the sixth inning. Blake Brisson got the game winning hit as he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to break up George Brandecker's no hitter. ESU would tack on five insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth taking advantage of two PSU errors.
Brisson went two for three at the plate scoring two runs and finishing with one run batted in. Dorain Williams also went two for three on the day and scored a run. Rudy Weiser had two runs batted in for ESU while Joe Kornbrust and Zack Carlson added one RBI each.
Brooks struck out three while scattering five hits and just one walk to pick up his fourth victory of the season.
In game two PSU struck first getting four runs in the top of the first inning. ESU would rebound though getting one in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. PSU would add three runs in the fifth inning and another tally in both the sixth and seventh. The Hornets would scratch across one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning but would get no closer in the 9-5 loss.
Ashton McCoy was two for four on the day and added to his team lead with three runs batted in. Williams and Weiser added single RBI's for the Hornets.
On the mound Keith Picht picked up his fourth loss of the season allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings of work. Justin Maxson pitched 2.2 innings of relief allowing only one earned run.
The two teams will play the series finale tomorrow with a scheduled 12 noon first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
