ESU explodes for 16 runs in game one, falls 10-5 in afternoon game

March 10, 2012 -- The #16 Emporia State baseball team split day two of the series with Northwest Missouri in Emporia. The Hornets won game one 16-3 before dropping the second game by a score of 10-6.

In game one Northwest Missouri scored the first run of the game to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning. ESU answered by batting around in the first and second inning combining for 13 runs between the two frames and did not look back on the way to a 16-3 victory.

Beau Poston first inning grand slam was the Hornets third in the last four games as he got the ESU bats started. Joe Kornbrust added a two run bomb as part of the Hornets seven run second inning. Poston finished two for three on the afternoon and drove in five runs while scoring two. Dorain Williams was two for three in the game with two runs batted in and a single tally scored. Eric Dawson went four for four in the game and scored three Hornet runs while driving in two. Joe Hosey had one of his best games of the season going two for three with two runs driven in.

Ashton McCoy went two for four with two runs scored and an RBI. Every Hornet starter had a hit as ESU batted around twice in the game, every starter also finished with either an RBI or a run scored.

On the mound Derek Brooks struck out six over five innings to pick up his third win of the season. Jarrod Miller and Kyle Rosine each worked scoreless innings in relief.

In game two it started as a pitchers duel as no one scored through the first four innings. The Bearcats broke the tie though in the fifth inning picking up three runs. The Hornets would respond capitalizing on two NWMSU errors in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Northwest would answer with two runs in the top of the sixth while ESU grabbed two more in the bottom half of the inning to stay within one run. The Bearcats would put the game away for good though adding three runs in the top of the seventh inning on the way to a 10-6 win. 

Joe Kornbrust went three for five and extended his hitting streak to 13 games while adding a run and an RBI. Joe Vaskas was also three for five with an RBI.

Keith Picht picked up his third loss of the season working five innings and allowing only three runs and striking out five.

The Hornets will next be in action March 16-18 when Pittsburg State comes to Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
