ESU gets nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn win

February 26, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team used 18 hits and a five run fifth inning to storm from behind for an 11-3 win on the road at Rockhurst. The Hornets had five extra base hits and stranded 12 Hawks on base.

Rockhurst struck first taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. The Hawks would extend their lead to three runs plating two runs in the fourth inning. ESU would rebound in the fifth inning highlighted by Zach Carlson's three run double. ESU plated four insurance runs in the sixth and added two more in the eighth as they rolled to the victory.

Dorain Williams went four for six on the afternoon adding two RBI and scoring following his fifth inning triple. Ashton McCoy was three for five as the top of the Hornets line-up went a combined 7 for 11 on the day. McCoy scored two runs and stole his team leading third base. Caleb Compton went two for five and scored two runs. Joe Vaskas went three for five in the game and scored a run and drove in a run.

Carlson led the team with three runs batted in while Joe Hosey went two for two with one run scored and one run driven in. Beau Poston scored two runs on the day while Joe Kornbrust added run scored and a stolen base.

On the mound Derek Brooks pitched the first 3.2 innings allowing three runs before Brandon Faulkner came on to pitch next 3.1 innings to pick up his first win. Justin Maxon did not allow a hit over the final two innings while striking out one and allowing only one base runner.

The Hornets begin MIAA play next weekend when they travel to Southwest Baptist for a weekend series. The series opens with a double header on March 2 scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch. The series will conclude with a double header on March 3 scheduled for a 12 noon first pitch.
