ESU gives up 10 runs late to Rockhurst

February 22, 2012 -- The #7 Emporia State baseball team trailed 3-0 for six innings, but gave up ten runs over the final three frames in a 13-3 loss to Rockhurst. The Hornets were outhit 15-11, though seven of Rockhurst's hits came in the last three innings.

ESU trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning when the ESU bats showed signs of life and cut the RU lead to 6-3. ESU would not get any closer though as the Hawks put up six runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Joe Vaskas was one for three on the afternoon, but his one hit was a two run home run to straight away center. Eric Dawson went two for four on the afternoon and scored a run. Joe Hosey had his first career hit for ESU going two for four with one run scored. Beau Poston also had a multiple hit game going two for five at the plate.

On the mound Zach Gove picked up his first loss to move to 1-1 on the season. Keith Picht pushed his scoreless innings streak out of the bullpen to 5.1 innings as he allowed only two hits while striking out three.

The Hornets will face Rockhurst again on Feb. 26 for a scheduled 2:00 p.m. first pitch from Kansas City, Mo.
