ESU takes advantage of two Loper errors to pick up the win

February 17, 2012 -- The #8 Emporia State baseball team got 11 hits and took advantage of two Nebraska-Kearney errors in a 4-2 victory. Only two of the Hornets four runs were earned as they scored two runs off UNK errors in the sixth inning to seal the win.

ESU struck in the first inning for the second straight day as Joe Kornbrust scored on a Caleb Compton RBI single. The Lopers would respond taking their first lead of the series putting up two runs in the top of the fourth inning. ESU would knot the score back up on a second Caleb Compton RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.

In the sixth inning Tyler Buchannan would lead off the inning with a single and be replaced by Rudy Weiser as a pinch runner. Blake Brisson would then single to center and as Rudy Weiser turned the corner for third the Loper center fielder overthrew third base and Weiser came home to score. Brisson, who had advanced to third on the error, would then score on a wild pitch by Cory Ridenour.

Joe Kornbrust continued his hot hitting going two for four and scoring a run. Compton also went two for four and drove in two runs. Eric Dawson finished his first start as a Hornet three for four. Dorain Williams had a hit in three chances and scored the other Hornet run.

Zach Gove picked up his first win of the season going 2.0 innings in relief and striking out three, once stranding the bases loaded for the Lopers who left 12 on base. Dominik King pitched the final two inning striking out one and allowing no base runners to pick up his first save.

The two teams will face off again on Feb. 19 for a scheduled 12 noon first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
