ESU gets five extra base hits in victory

February 17, 2012 -- The Emporia State baseball team used 13 hits and took advantage of two Nebraska-Kearney errors in an 11-5 victory to open the season. The Hornets went for five extra base hits and got seven strikeouts from their pitchers.

The Hornets got the scoring started in the first inning putting up a single tally before three more runs crossed the plate in the second. ESU would then get a single run in the fourth before blowing the game open with a five run fifth inning. The Lopers answered with two in the top of the sixth while ESU scratched out another run in the bottom half of the inning. UNK would get two in the seventh and one in the eight, but would get not closer.

Joe Kornbrust had a fine day going three for five with three runs driven in as he singled twice and added a triple. Dorain Williams went three for four and scored three runs. Beau Poston was one for three, but reached base three times and came around to score three runs. Rudy Weiser had an RBI double, finishing with three runs batted in on the afternoon. Ashton McCoy was two for four and drove in two Hornet runs. Jordan Slade and Joe Vaskas also added runs driven in for the Hornets.

Derek Brooks pitched 5.2 inning striking out four to pick up his first victory of the year.

The same two teams will face off on Feb. 18 for a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch from Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
