LET’S GET IT STARTED
Emporia State opens the regular season at Missouri S&T, the first of six non-conference games to open the 2012-13 season.
OPENING ACT
The Hornets will look to start the season strong and win their season opener for the second consecutive season. Emporia State opened last season with a 85-67 win over Friends. Emporia State last won an opener on the road during the 2008-09 season.
LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State led Kansas State 19-18 with 4:52 left in the first half before falling 81-51 to the Wildcats in Bramlage Coliseum. It was the third time in three exhibition games, Emporia State held a first half lead after the first media timeout against their Division I opponent and led 19-18 with 4:52 to go in the first half. Kaleb Wright led Emporia State with 11 points and five rebounds. Gavin Brown had eight points and a team high six boards as nine of the 11 Hornets that played scored for Emporia State.
THE COACHES
Shaun Vandiver is 9-18 in his second season at Emporia State. A first round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors in 1991 spent ten years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. As a player he was a key component in Hutchinson CC’s tournament run to the 1988 NJCAA National Championship before earning first-team All-Big 8 honors at Colorado.
Jim Glash is 21-49 in his fourth year at Missouri S&T and is 181-180 in his ninth year overall.
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
After three exhibition games, freshman Terrence Moore leads the Hornets in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game while also averaging 3.3 steals per contest. Gavin Brown is the team’s top rebounder averaging 6.7 per game along with 8.3 points. Ten of the 12 players on the roster have scored.
SCOUTING MISSOURI S&T
The Miners were 7-20 last season and finished tied for fifth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Miners return three starters from last year including Michael Jackson, who averaged 10.4 points per game. Bryce Foster led the team with 14 points in MIssouri S&T’s 61-60 win over Western Illinois in exhibition play on Nov. 5.
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 21st meeting between the two squads with Emporia State holding a 12-8 overall edge. The Hornets have won four straight versus the Miners.
LAST TIME AGAINST THE MINERS
The Hornets won the last meeting 70-61 on Jan. 29, 2005 in Rolla. Tyrell Sledge led the Hornets with 21 points, while Deshawn Anderson added 20 points. The Hornets scored 40 points on 59% shooting in the second half to overcome a 31-30 halftime deficit. It was the last meeting as MIAA foes as Missouri S&T left to join the GLVC.
